ABOUT THE CLASS

 

You don't need to know any Spanish to walk into this class. You also don't need to have studied it, though many of our students have for years and still feel like they can't hold a conversation. Either way, you're in the right place.

Foundations 1 is a one-hour live session on Zoom, built around the way people actually acquire language: through listening, stories, and conversation that's just within reach. You won't be conjugating verbs or memorizing vocabulary lists, and if you've always been told that you need to study grammar first, this class will surprise you: you'll acquire Spanish the way you acquired your first language, through comprehensible, engaging input, and the grammar takes care of itself.

The methodology of the class is designed so that someone who has never heard a word of Spanish and someone who studied for four years can both be in the same room and both be getting exactly what they need. 

BEGINNER: FOUNDATIONS 1

EXPRESS FLUENCY

 

Express Fluency offers Spanish classes at every stage of the journey, from your very first word to fluid, free-flowing conversation. All classes use Comprehensible Input (CI), an immersive, story-based approach that mirrors the way you acquired your first language. No grammar drills, no verb charts. Just Spanish, in context, from the very first class. (We know that might sound strange,but it works.)

ELISSA MCCLEAN

 

Elissa founded Express Fluency in 2012 to bring Comprehensible-Input based language classes to adults. Tired of hearing (almost) everyone say “I studied (fill in the blank) language in school for 4 years and I can’t speak a word now” – she decided to be part of a movement to change that. She holds a Masters degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and has taught Spanish to students from preschool to college and adults. Prior to teaching Spanish full-time she co-founded two innovative expedition-based high schools. She loves to travel, meet new people, spend time with her friends and family, and help bring more joy and multilingualism into the world.
